Workshop: Get Your Story Straight

Many advocates, candidates, and organizations have a deep understanding of the research and lived experiences supporting our opposition to various injustices in society. Yet we often struggle to translate that knowledge into compelling, proactive communications that attract members, retain donors, or effectively counter disinformation. Knowing our narrative is key to unlocking our cause or campaign’s potential, as well as helping the broader public understand why and how they can make a difference on important issues.

Narrative strategy isn’t just essential for building an external audience– it’s a fundamental part of making sense of what you’re trying to do in the world. “Getting your story straight” helps you build internal alignment and message discipline around the changes your campaign or organization is trying to catalyze, making your work easier and more effective over time. In this workshop, your team will:

  • Learn how values-driven narrative techniques help you promote your cause or candidate more effectively, while simultaneously helping collective efforts to reclaim our information environment from bad actors

  • Articulate or refine a proactive theory of change for your campaign or organization

  • Generate an overarching narrative for your campaign or organization that eases your internal and external communications processes

  • Learn a process and receive tools you can use again and again to refine and update your narrative over time, as well as generate related stories and theories of change for individual campaigns and donor outreach efforts.

This workshop is available as a one-day session (ideal for strategic planning retreats), or as a 90- to 120-minute add-on to Values-Driven Narrative Building (ideal for launching smaller-scale donor outreach or issue campaigns).
