Cultivating Trust Through Intentional Communication
At its core, our information crisis is a crisis of trust. Because we cannot know everything or vet every bit of research for ourselves, relational trust is essential for our ability to make sense of the world. This is exactly what disinformation campaigns attack: not only our ability to discern what’s true and what’s false, but our ability to trust other people and sources of information.
In this 90-minute workshop, I’ll offer a quick refresher of information disorder and the kinds of political manipulation that define so much of our economic and political landscape. We’ll then define and explore seven elements of trust and map them onto a variety of communications strategies and tactics. Finally, we’ll move into a facilitated mini-strategy session so participants can reflect on which elements of trust their organizations or communities need to strengthen, and begin to think through how to identify habits, narratives, and messages that will promote trust.
